Salty Swims a Community Interest Company and Blue Health Project based in Cornwall

Salty Swims, Community Interest Company is a Blue Health Project formed in September 2021. Our activities provide swimming coaching and support, through community swimming groups, with a particular focus on reaching those from disadvantaged backgrounds in Cornwall.

The project is run by a group of professionals with experience in open water swimming, business, and education, who all share a vision of improving lives and lifestyles through swimming.

We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to experience the sea for their swimming journey whether it is for physical & mental health, socialising, competing or just being able to discover the enjoyment that swimming and being in the sea can bring. We provide inclusive swimming lessons, courses and events in Cornwall. Including regular social swims and educational programmes for all ages and all abilities.

We are excited to work alongside NHS social prescribers and local community groups and we are eternally grateful for the foresight and commitment of our funders.

What is Blue Health?

Blue Health is based upon the concept, and commonly held belief, that spending time near or in water is good for us. Blue health is a popular, global topic that is fast becoming a household phrase, with more research taking place every year to uncover the benefits. Poor physical and mental health have huge negative impacts upon individuals, with the cost of treatment considerable. Over the last three decades an increasing number of scientific studies have assessed and proved that access to natural and wild spaces can have a positive impact (Green Health) and since 2010 that has expanded to cover the impacts of time spent alongside, in, on or under water (Blue Health). It has been discovered that it is actually where these two environments meet, at the coast or on the banks of rivers and lakes for example, that the greatest benefits occur. Salty Swims promote Blue Health we bring people together to share this experience. Within this people find friendships, resilience, courage, strength and community.

Cold Water Therapy & Swimming Sessions

Cold Water Therapy & Swimming Sessions

Cold Water Therapy & Swimming Sessions

This class is focused on cold water therapy for mental health and well-being. You may be familiar with Wim Hof, his breathing techniques and his ice baths for health, and you may have even given them a go but that’s not all there is to cold-water therapy. Cold-water therapy is a branch of cryotherapy and its aim is to improve your health. In our cold water sessions, we get into the sea and the cold water is used to stimulate the body’s responses and aid recovery. We will practice dynamic breathing techniques and that with the cold water immersion will help your mind and body reset. Cold water therapy has been around for hundreds of years. Somehow in modern day life we’ve forgotten the benefits there are being outside and engaging with the natural world. With a background in Complementary Therapies and extensive mental health experience, I wanted to be able to incorporate that into my coaching and swimming life. In this session we will focus on the health benefits of cold water, we will aim to build confidence, improve mood, reduce stress and will focus on a positive moves forward. There is a growing bank of evidence that indicates cold water immersion  improves your health, gives you a natural high, reduces stress, increases your libido, burns calories and recent studies show an improvement in mood for people experiencing depression
